Sydney is hard on outdoor timber. UV radiation, humidity, coastal salt air, freeze-thaw cycles in elevated areas — your deck deals with all of it. So how long should you realistically expect it to last?
Here are the honest numbers — not the marketing figures.

## Timber Decking Lifespan in Sydney
### Treated Pine: 10–15 years
Treated pine is the budget option and the lifespan reflects that. With excellent maintenance (annual oiling, prompt repair of damage), you might stretch it to 15 years. Neglect it and you could be looking at replacement in 8–10 years. Not recommended for coastal suburbs or heavily shaded areas (moisture trap).
### Merbau: 15–25 years
Sydney’s most popular hardwood. Well-maintained Merbau decks regularly hit 20+ years. The key is consistent oiling every 12–18 months. It will grey and crack without it, but it’s very forgiving if you stay on top of maintenance.
### Spotted Gum: 20–30 years
One of the best naturally durable Australian hardwoods. Spotted Gum handles Sydney’s conditions extremely well. With proper care, 25–30 years is realistic. It’s also naturally slip-resistant when freshly oiled.
### Jarrah: 25–40 years
Premium hardwood with excellent natural durability and termite resistance. Some Jarrah decks in Sydney are 30+ years old and still going. The investment upfront pays off over time.
### Blackbutt: 15–25 years
Slightly softer than Spotted Gum but still very durable. Popular in coastal areas for its light colour and cooler underfoot feel.

## Composite Decking Lifespan in Sydney
### Mid-range composite (Modwood, Ecodeck): 20–25 years
Good-quality composite from reputable Australian manufacturers. With zero maintenance requirements, these boards genuinely last 20+ years in Sydney conditions.
### Premium composite (Trex, Millboard, TimberTech): 25–30+ years
These brands back their products with 25-year warranties on fading and staining. In Sydney’s climate, premium composite has proven to be incredibly durable. We’ve installed Trex decks 12+ years ago that still look brand new.
### AZEK / TimberTech PVC composite: 30–50 years
PVC-based composite has the longest lifespan of any decking material. Virtually impervious to moisture, UV and temperature extremes. Premium price, but essentially a once-in-a-generation investment.

## What Kills a Deck Prematurely in Sydney
**1. Lack of maintenance (timber)**
The #1 killer of Sydney timber decks. One missed year of oiling in Sydney’s climate can mean 3–5 years off the lifespan. Set a reminder, it’s that simple.
**2. Poor drainage**
Water pooling under or on a deck accelerates rot in timber and can cause structural failure. Good deck design accounts for drainage — something we always check.
**3. Incorrect material for the location**
Pine decking in a coastal suburb. Dark composite in full western sun without shade. Merbau around a pool (tannin staining + constant moisture). Matching material to location is something we take seriously.
**4. Cheap materials and installation**
We see it regularly — decks built by the cheapest quote that need full replacement in 5–7 years. The subframe matters as much as the boards. Galvanised or stainless fixings. Proper bearer sizing. This is where quality shows.
—
## How to Make Your Deck Last Longer
– **Timber:** Oil every 12–18 months. Don’t let leaves and debris sit on the surface. Check for soft spots annually.
– **Composite:** Rinse down regularly. Clear any debris from between boards. That’s genuinely it.
– **Any deck:** Inspect the subframe every 2–3 years. The boards often outlast the framing if the framing was underspecified.
—
## When Is It Time to Replace vs Repair?
We’re deck builders, so we could tell everyone to replace. But honestly — if the subframe is sound and only the boards are tired, a **deck reboard** (replacing boards only) is often 40–60% cheaper than full replacement and gives you another 15–20 years.
We’ll always give you the honest answer on which makes more financial sense for your specific situation.
