Deck Maintenance Tips for Sydney Homeowners: Keep Your Investment Looking New
A well-built deck is one of the best investments you can make in your Sydney home. But like any outdoor structure, it needs regular care to stay safe, looking good, and structurally sound. The good news? Most maintenance is simple, takes just a few hours a year, and costs far less than repairs or replacement.
Here’s our practical maintenance guide for timber and composite decks in Sydney’s climate.
Timber Decks: The Annual Routine
If you have a Merbau, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, or other hardwood deck, regular maintenance keeps the timber protected and extends its lifespan by years.
1. Clean Your Deck Twice a Year
Spring and autumn are ideal. Use a stiff-bristled deck brush and plain water, or a low-pressure hose (never use a high-pressure washer on timber — it damages the wood grain). Sweep out all debris — leaves, dirt, and organic matter trap moisture and accelerate deterioration.
For stubborn moss or algae growth (common in Sydney’s humid climate), use a mixture of one part white vinegar to three parts water. Scrub with a brush and rinse thoroughly.
2. Oil Your Deck Every 12–18 Months
This is the most important maintenance step. Penetrating oil protects timber from UV damage, moisture ingress, and weathering. As your deck ages, the colour will naturally grey — that’s not damage, it’s character — but oiling slows it and keeps the timber nourished.
Choose a dry day forecast for at least 48 hours. Apply two coats of quality penetrating oil (we recommend Cabot’s, Feast Watson, or Timber Oil) with a brush or applicator, following the manufacturer’s drying times between coats.
Cost: typically $80–150 in materials for a 30m² deck. If you prefer to have it done professionally, expect $150/m² for a full oil application.
3. Inspect for Damage Monthly
Walk your deck in summer and winter, checking for:
- Soft or spongy boards — press down on each plank. Any give signals moisture and potential rot
- Loose fixings — tighten any visible screws or bolts. Loose fixings allow movement and accelerate damage
- Gaps between boards — timber expands and contracts with moisture. Gaps are normal, but if they’re wider than 5mm, check the boards aren’t cupping or warping
- Cracking — surface checking (small cracks along the grain) is normal and not a structural issue. If cracks run across the grain or go deep, that board may need replacing
- Debris in corners — leaves and dirt that collect under railings trap moisture. Clear them out regularly
4. Address Problems Quickly
If you find a soft spot, loose joist, or visible rot, don’t wait. Small issues are cheap to fix. Left unattended, they spread and become expensive. A single rotted board costs $300–500 to replace. A rotted joist can cost $1,500+.
Composite Decks: Lower Maintenance, But Not No Maintenance
Composite decking (Millboard, Evalast, Modwood, etc.) requires far less upkeep than timber, but it still needs care to stay looking its best.
1. Wash Every 6 Months
A simple hose-down and brush with soapy water keeps composite looking fresh. You can use a low-pressure washer, but keep it at least 60cm away and use a 25° nozzle — high pressure can damage the surface coating.
2. Deal With Stains Promptly
Composite resists rot and insect damage, but it can stain. Wine, fruit juice, and organic matter can leave marks if left sitting.
For most stains: scrub with a soft brush and a mix of mild dish soap and water. For tougher marks, a 1:1 vinegar and water solution works well. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
3. Keep Guttering Clear
If your deck is under or near a roof gutter, fallen leaves and debris can block water flow, causing it to pool on the deck surface. Clean gutters seasonally, especially in autumn.
4. Minor Repairs
Composite boards can develop small cracks or edge damage over time. Most manufacturers sell repair kits (filler + colour-matched paint) for under $50. Small repairs now prevent larger problems later.
General Maintenance for Any Deck
Check Your Railings and Steps
Railings and steps take a lot of wear. Inspect fixings annually, tighten loose bolts, and ensure balusters (vertical posts) are solid. If your balustrade is wobbly, fix it — it’s a safety issue.
Keep Fasteners Tight
Screws and bolts loosen over time, especially in decks subject to movement and temperature swings. Do a visual walkthrough twice a year and tighten anything that’s come loose.
Trim Vegetation
If plants, creepers, or overhanging tree branches grow across your deck, trim them back. They trap moisture, block airflow, and accelerate deterioration. Keep at least 30cm clearance around the deck perimeter.
Watch for Pest Activity
Termites and borers are a risk in Sydney. If you see small holes in timber, exit holes, or sawdust-like debris, contact a pest professional immediately. Early detection saves thousands in repairs.
Seasonal Checklist
Spring: Clean thoroughly, inspect for winter damage, tighten fixings, trim vegetation.
Summer: Monthly inspection for soft spots and damage; ensure good drainage and airflow.
Autumn: Clean gutters and deck surface, remove leaf debris, prepare for winter.
Winter: Reduce use if possible (wet timber is slippery), clear debris after storms, check for water pooling.
When to Call a Professional
Handle basic cleaning and inspection yourself, but for these jobs, get a professional in:
- Structural repairs (rotted joists, broken bearers)
- Replacing multiple boards or railings
- Full deck restoration or sanding
- Pest treatment or termite inspections
- Waterproofing or underlayment work
