When a Summer Hill homeowner came to us with a rotting, unsafe timber deck, they had one goal: replace it with something beautiful that they’d never have to worry about again. We removed the old structure completely and installed a brand new composite deck in charcoal grey — finished with built-in steps and a clean, flush edge detail that suits the courtyard perfectly.
The result? A safe, stunning outdoor space that the client described as life-changing. Here’s how we did it.
The Problem: A Rotting Timber Deck
The existing deck was well past its best — soft spots underfoot, rotting boards and a frame that was no longer safe. Like many timber decks in Sydney’s inner west, years of exposure to UV, rain and humidity had taken their toll. The client had been putting off the replacement for too long, and it was time to act.
We removed the entire structure — boards, frame and all — assessed the ground condition underneath, and started fresh with a properly spec’d composite build.
The Solution: Full Composite Deck Replacement
We installed a full composite deck system in charcoal grey — one of our most popular colours for inner-west Sydney homes. The composite boards sit on a new treated pine subframe, properly spaced for drainage and airflow, with all fixings concealed for a clean finish.
Key features of the build:
- Full deck removal — old structure completely cleared before work started
- New treated pine subframe — properly spec’d for the span and load
- Charcoal grey composite boards — no oiling, no sanding, no maintenance required
- Built-in composite steps — integrated into the deck design for a seamless look
- Concealed fixings throughout — clean, uninterrupted board surface
Why Composite for a Sydney Courtyard?
Summer Hill’s compact terrace-style courtyards can be tough on traditional timber. The combination of Sydney’s intense UV, wet winters and limited airflow in enclosed spaces accelerates rot and warping in timber boards. Composite eliminates all of that.
- ✅ Zero maintenance — no oiling, sanding or repainting, ever
- ✅ Won’t rot, warp or splinter — safe for bare feet year-round
- ✅ Slip resistant — rated for wet conditions
- ✅ 25-year product warranty on leading composite brands
- ✅ Eco-friendly — made from recycled timber and plastic
What the Client Said
“I can add another five star review to the many already posted for 5 Star Decking. Ben and Eugene did an excellent job replacing my rotting, unsafe deck with composite decking. I’m so happy to be able to sit outside and enjoy my courtyard without being worried about falling in a hole again, and to not have to worry about redoing it for decades! Clear communications from Hayley as well and a great result, would happily recommend.”
