If you’re looking for a premium deck builder in Alexandria, NSW, you’ve found the right team. At 5 Star Decking, we design and build custom timber and composite decks for homeowners across Alexandria, Erskineville, Newtown, St Peters and the inner south. This page showcases a recent Merbau balcony deck we completed for a client in Alexandria — and it’s one of our favourite builds of 2026.
Alexandria Merbau Balcony Deck — Project Showcase
This Alexandria client came to us with a tired, weathered balcony that needed a complete replacement. The brief was simple: durable, beautiful, low maintenance. We specified Merbau hardwood decking — a Class 1 rated tropical hardwood known for its rich reddish-brown grain, natural oil content, and outstanding resistance to Sydney’s heat, rain and humidity.
The balcony sits on the ground floor of a modern apartment block in Alexandria. We stripped the existing surface back to the frame, inspected and reinforced the substructure, then laid new Merbau boards with stainless steel secret fixings throughout. The result? A seamless, fastener-free surface with that deep, warm grain that only a real hardwood delivers.
Why Merbau for an Alexandria Balcony?
Alexandria is a dense inner-city suburb — balconies here face reflected heat from brick and concrete, plus Sydney’s regular downpours. Merbau is one of the best timbers for this environment for several reasons:
- Class 1 durability rating — the highest outdoor classification in Australia, meaning it naturally resists rot, fungal decay and termites without chemical treatment
- Natural oil content — Merbau produces its own tannin-rich oils that repel moisture and protect the timber from within
- Longevity — properly maintained Merbau decks last 25–40 years in Sydney conditions
- Appearance — that rich reddish-brown colour deepens over time, and a simple annual oil coat keeps it looking brand new
- Cost — Merbau typically costs $350–$500/m² supply and install, making it one of the most cost-effective premium hardwoods available
