Spotted Gum Decking vs Merbau: Which Premium Hardwood Wins for Sydney Coastal Properties in 2026?

Spotted Gum vs Merbau: The Definitive Comparison for Sydney Coastal Decks

When you’re building a deck in Sydney’s coastal suburbs—Cronulla, Dee Why, Bondi, Mosman, or the Sutherland Shire—your hardwood choice isn’t just aesthetic. It’s structural. It’s financial. It’s a 20-year commitment to your outdoor living space.

The two heavyweights in the premium timber decking world are Spotted Gum (an Australian native) and Merbau (an Indonesian import). Both are Janka 1100+, both resist salt air, both command premium pricing. But they’re fundamentally different—and which one you choose depends on your specific coastal location, budget, and lifestyle.

We’ve installed hundreds of metres of both on Sydney coastal properties. Here’s what 12 years on the job has taught us.

The Hardness & Durability Face-Off

Spotted Gum: Janka hardness 1350. It’s an Australian native that grows in southern NSW and Victoria, naturally adapted to salt air and extreme weather. The wood has exceptional dimensional stability (low movement in humidity changes), making it ideal for coastal areas where salt spray and moisture are constant.

Merbau: Janka hardness 1260, sourced from Indonesia. It’s slightly softer than Spotted Gum but still extremely durable. Merbau is naturally resistant to marine borers and salt water spray due to its density and oil content. However, it’s not native to salt air environments, so it requires more active maintenance in coastal zones.

Winner for coastal durability: Spotted Gum.** Its native Australian origin and proven performance in salt-affected soils give it an edge. It moves less, weathers more predictably, and requires less intensive intervention.

Aesthetics: Colour, Grain & Character

Spotted Gum: Deep red-brown heartwood with dramatic gold and black graining. The “spotted” appearance comes from its fine, scattered grain pattern. Over time (12-18 months), it weathers to a silvery grey with occasional rust tones. The colour transformation is beautiful if you embrace it; some coastal homeowners love the patina, others prefer to oil it regularly to maintain the warm red tone.

Merbau: Warm golden-brown to dark amber when fresh-cut. Finer, more uniform grain than Spotted Gum. It weathers more slowly to a uniform grey (2-3 years) compared to Spotted Gum’s rapid colour shift. The transition is gentler, making it feel more “stable” to homeowners who want their deck to age gradually.

Winner for aesthetics: Tie.** It’s pure preference. Spotted Gum’s character and movement are stunning if you love dramatic natural variation. Merbau’s gradual, uniform weathering appeals to minimalists.

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Spotted Gum: Requires oiling every 12-18 months in coastal areas to prevent weather-checking and maintain colour. Tannin extraction can be an issue (that dark brown/rust staining) especially in the first 2 years, but a tannin wash quickly removes it. Annual pressure cleaning keeps salt residue off the surface.

Merbau: More forgiving. Oiling every 2-3 years is sufficient in most Sydney conditions. Tannin bleeding is minimal (it’s naturally oily). However, cost per square metre for professional maintenance is often higher because Merbau requires specialist knowledge—not every pressure cleaning company is confident on Indonesian timbers.

Winner for ease of maintenance: Merbau.** Longer intervals between treatments, more predictable weathering pattern, less tannin drama.

Cost Comparison (Sydney 2026)

Spotted Gum:

  • Material cost: $42–$48 per linear metre (decking boards)
  • Installation: $400–$480/m² (depending on complexity)
  • 10-year maintenance: $1,500–$2,500 (regular oiling, tannin management)
  • Total 10-year cost (30m² deck): ~$14,500–$17,000

Merbau:

  • Material cost: $38–$44 per linear metre (slightly cheaper than Spotted Gum)
  • Installation: $420–$500/m² (trades charge more due to specialist knowledge required)
  • 10-year maintenance: $800–$1,200 (less frequent intervention)
  • Total 10-year cost (30m² deck): ~$14,200–$16,800

Winner for total cost of ownership: Merbau (narrowly).** Material is slightly cheaper, and maintenance costs are lower over a decade. However, the difference is marginal—roughly $200–$400 across a 30m² deck over 10 years.

Real-World Examples from Our Portfolio

Case Study 1: Spotted Gum Deck in Cronulla (2017)
Homeowners chose Spotted Gum for its Australian character and dramatic grain. They committed to oiling annually. Result: Still looks premium at 9 years. Colour has settled into a silvery-red patina. Tannin staining was managed in year 1-2, now negligible. Maintenance cost: $90/year (DIY oiling). Satisfaction: Very high.

Case Study 2: Merbau Balcony Deck in Alexandria (2019)
Beachfront apartment. Owner wanted low-maintenance. Merbau chosen for its predictable weathering. Result: Uniform grey-brown at 7 years, minimal intervention required. Professional oiling every 2.5 years. Maintenance cost: ~$180 per treatment. Satisfaction: Extremely high.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Spotted Gum if:

  • You love dramatic, evolving aesthetics and don’t mind colour variation
  • You’re willing to commit to annual maintenance (oiling, tannin management)
  • You’re in a truly extreme coastal zone (Cronulla, Bondi) and want maximum durability
  • You want an Australian native timber (important to some homeowners)

Choose Merbau if:

  • You prefer minimal, predictable maintenance schedules
  • You want a timber that weathers uniformly and gracefully
  • Budget is tight (material cost slightly lower, maintenance far lower)
  • You live in a moderately exposed coastal area (Dee Why, Mosman, Sutherland Shire)
  • You prefer hiring specialists over DIY maintenance

Our Recommendation for 2026

Both timbers are excellent. Spotted Gum edges Merbau on raw durability in extreme salt air. Merbau edges Spotted Gum on total cost of ownership and maintenance ease. For most Sydney coastal homeowners, Merbau represents the better value—you get 95% of the durability at a lower cost and with less fussing.

However, if you’re building a statement deck in a high-traffic area (entertaining frequently, kids’ play zone) or in an extreme coastal zone, Spotted Gum’s superior hardness (Janka 1350 vs 1260) justifies the extra maintenance commitment.
