When a Maroubra homeowner came to us needing a new outdoor space off their rear sliding doors, they had one key requirement: they wanted it done properly, at a price that made sense. The courtyard was narrow — a classic Inner East Sydney side alley — sandwiched between the house wall and the back fence. Not an easy space to work in, but exactly the kind of project we enjoy.
The result? A clean, multi-level pine deck with a two-step entry, fully framed, structurally sound, and built to last. Here’s the full story.
The Brief: A Usable Outdoor Space from a Tight Courtyard
The existing concrete area was functional but uninviting — no greenery integration, no defined entertaining zone, no connection between the rear rooms and the garden. The homeowner wanted to change that without overcapitalising on a rental property.
Pine was the right call here. Budget-conscious, quick to install, workable in tight access areas, and when properly treated, perfectly adequate for a sheltered Sydney courtyard.
Why Pine for a Sydney Deck?
Pine gets a bad reputation in the decking world — mostly from people who’ve seen untreated pine rot out or splinter after a few harsh summers. That reputation is fair if you’re talking about untreated pine left exposed on a north-facing coastal rooftop. But for a sheltered courtyard in Maroubra? Pine makes a lot of sense.
Here’s why we recommended it for this project:
- Cost-effective: At roughly $440/m² installed for hardwood, pine comes in significantly cheaper — making it ideal for smaller footprints or investment properties
- Easy to work with: Pine is lightweight and easy to cut, which matters in tight access builds where manoeuvring long hardwood boards is genuinely difficult
- Treatable: H3 or H4 treated pine is rated for outdoor use in Australia and will hold up well in a sheltered setting with regular oiling
- Looks great fresh: The warm, light honey tone of fresh pine is genuinely beautiful — as you can see from the photos below
The key with pine is maintenance. Oil it annually, keep it clean, and it’ll look great for years. Ignore it and let it dry out, and you’ll have problems within a couple of seasons.
The Build: Split-Level Entry with Steps
The design was driven by the site: the sliding door threshold sat roughly two steps above the concrete slab level, so the natural solution was a two-tier deck — a raised platform level off the door, with broad steps stepping down to the lower deck area that extends toward the garden.

The step risers and treads are all matching pine — no mixing of materials — which gives it a cohesive, intentional look. The framing is fully supported on concrete footings with galvanised hardware throughout. No shortcuts on the structural elements.
The Result: Before and After the Transformation

What strikes you in person (and in the photos) is how much the deck changes the character of the space. What was a concrete utility strip is now a warm, welcoming outdoor area with natural timber underfoot, garden views, and a direct connection to the interior living zone.
How Much Does a Pine Deck Cost in Sydney?
Pine decking is the most affordable timber option we offer — significantly cheaper than hardwood alternatives like Merbau ($440/m²) or Spotted Gum, while still delivering real timber warmth and quality.
For a project like this Maroubra build — a compact split-level courtyard deck with steps and framing — a typical price range would be:
- Small courtyard deck (15–25m²): $4,500–$7,500 installed
- Mid-size deck with steps (25–40m²): $7,500–$12,000 installed
- Larger deck with balustrades: From $12,000+
Exact pricing depends on your access conditions, the level of framing complexity, whether DA approval is needed, and what finish/treatment you choose. We’ll give you a fixed price upfront — no surprises.
Maintaining Your Pine Deck in Sydney
Sydney’s UV load is high, and pine needs protection to stay looking good. Our maintenance recommendations for a pine deck in Maroubra’s climate:
- First oil application: 2–4 weeks after installation, once the timber has acclimatised
- Ongoing oiling: Every 12 months minimum. Every 6 months for exposed decks
- Annual clean: Pressure wash or scrub to remove salt deposits and organic build-up before oiling
- Check for movement: Pine expands and contracts more than hardwood — check fixing tightness annually
If you keep on top of the maintenance schedule, a quality pine deck in a sheltered Sydney courtyard will easily last 15–20 years.
