There’s something unmistakably Sydney about a Spotted Gum deck at night — the warm amber tones glowing under garden lighting, the tight grain catching the light from an open French door. We recently completed exactly this kind of job in Surry Hills, and the results speak for themselves.
This post walks through the full project: why the client chose Spotted Gum, the challenges of building in a compact Victorian terrace courtyard, and what you can expect if you’re considering a hardwood deck in the inner south.

The Brief: A Courtyard That Felt Like an Outdoor Room
The client had a typical Surry Hills terrace — beautiful character, but an underused concrete courtyard sandwiched between the house’s French doors and a back laneway fence. They wanted to transform it into a proper outdoor living area: somewhere for dinner parties, morning coffee, and barefoot summer evenings.
The brief was clear: natural timber, low maintenance, warm tones, and something that looked at home in a character terrace rather than a new build. After reviewing the options — Merbau, Blackbutt, and Spotted Gum — they went with Spotted Gum for its richness and its tight, wavy grain that photographs beautifully under evening light.

Why Spotted Gum? The Numbers Behind the Beauty
Spotted Gum is arguably Australia’s finest outdoor hardwood. Here’s why it kept coming up in our recommendation for this particular project:
| Hardness (Janka) | 11 kN — one of the hardest native Australian timbers |
| Durability Class | Class 1 above ground — 25+ year lifespan when maintained |
| Fire Resistance | BAL-19 rated (good for inner-city rooftop & elevated decks) |
| Natural oils | High — naturally resistant to termites, decay and moisture |
| Appearance | Wavy interlocked grain, warm amber-chocolate tones |
| Maintenance | Oil every 12–18 months to maintain colour; silvers gracefully without treatment |
| Sustainability | FSC certified available; sourced from NSW/QLD state forests |
For a Surry Hills terrace, where the deck would see foot traffic from the kitchen through two sets of French doors, we also needed a board that could handle constant wet-dry cycles — Sydney’s winter rain followed by summer heat. Spotted Gum handles this better than Merbau (which can bleed red tannins) and holds its colour better than Blackbutt in shaded courtyard conditions.
The Build: Working Around a Victorian Terrace
Surry Hills terraces don’t make life easy for builders. This courtyard came with the usual inner-city constraints:
- Shared walls on three sides — no room to swing a saw without careful staging
- A mature tree growing through the middle of the deck area — we built around it rather than remove it, creating a natural focal point
- Two French door access points at different heights — requiring a split-level layout with a single step transition
- Existing concrete planters — these were retained and the decking was fitted tightly around them, creating integrated seating ledges
- A rear laneway drainage grate — we designed the step-down section as a removable panel for access

The frame was constructed with treated pine bearers and joists, set at 450mm centres to handle the hardwood load. All fixings were stainless steel — a non-negotiable in a terrace environment where condensation and ventilation is limited.
The boards were laid at 5mm gaps using stainless lost-head nails hand-driven at 45° through the face — a traditional technique that gives a cleaner finish than plug-and-screw on a narrow board profile. The face screws visible in the step section were driven on the slant and stainless plugged for a uniform look.
Builder’s Note: The Tree Was the Best Design Decision
The client almost wanted the existing mature tree removed before the build. We pushed back — suggesting we frame around it instead. It ended up becoming the centrepiece of the whole courtyard, supporting the fairy light canopy overhead and providing natural shade to the dining area. Sometimes the obstacles become the features.
Finishing: First Coat on the Day
Spotted Gum is naturally oily, which is both a benefit and a challenge for finishing. On the day of completion we applied a first coat of Cutek CD50 in Clear — a penetrating oil designed for dense hardwoods. This seals the surface, enhances the natural grain, and makes the amber tones really sing, especially under artificial lighting.
The client was advised to apply a second coat after 4–6 weeks (once the timber has fully acclimatised and settled into position) and annually thereafter in autumn. With that maintenance schedule, this deck should look this good in 15 years.

What Did It Cost?
This project came in at approximately $13,400 fully installed, including materials, labour, frame, and waste removal. The breakdown was roughly:
- Spotted Gum decking boards (86mm × 19mm, 5.4m lengths) — ~$4,800
- Treated pine subframe (bearers, joists, hardware) — ~$1,600
- Labour (2 carpenters, 3.5 days) — ~$5,200
- First coat Cutek application — ~$600
- Site clean and waste — ~$400
- Stainless fixings and hardware — ~$800
This works out to around $445–$460/m², consistent with our standard hardwood pricing of $440/m² for straightforward builds. The slight premium reflected the split-level and the tree framing work.
Is Spotted Gum Right for Your Surry Hills Home?
Spotted Gum is a fantastic choice for inner-city terraces, but it’s not always the only one. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide:
- Choose Spotted Gum if: you love rich, warm tones; you want a statement piece; you don’t mind oiling annually; you have a partly shaded courtyard
- Consider Blackbutt if: you prefer a cooler, lighter palette or a deck that blends with sandstone more naturally
- Consider Merbau if: budget is the primary driver and you’re comfortable with occasional tannin bleeding in rain
- Consider Composite if: you want literally zero maintenance and don’t mind a slightly more uniform appearance
