How to Maintain Your Deck in Sydney (Timber & Composite Guide)

—

A well-maintained deck can last 25–30 years. A neglected one needs replacing in 10. Given that decks cost $10,000–$30,000 to build, a bit of maintenance is always worth it.

Here’s exactly what to do — and when — to keep your Sydney deck in top shape.

## Timber Deck Maintenance

### The Annual Oil/Stain: Your Most Important Task

If you do nothing else, **oil or stain your timber deck once a year.** In Sydney’s climate — UV, humidity, coastal air — this is the single biggest thing you can do to extend your deck’s life.

**When:** Late autumn or early spring is ideal. Avoid oiling in full summer heat — the oil dries too fast and won’t penetrate properly. Avoid oiling right before expected rain.

**How:**
1. Clean the deck thoroughly (see below)
2. Allow to dry completely — 48 hours minimum
3. Apply oil/stain with a brush, roller or pad applicator
4. Work with the grain, not against it
5. Allow to dry fully before use (typically 24–48 hours)

**What to use:** For Merbau, a penetrating oil (Feast Watson, Cutek, Intergrain) works well. For Spotted Gum and other dense hardwoods, use a hardwood-specific oil. Always check compatibility with your timber species.

### Cleaning Your Timber Deck

**Every 3–6 months:** Sweep, hose down, remove any debris from between boards.

**Annual (before oiling):** A proper clean with a timber deck cleaner or diluted oxalic acid solution removes grey weathering, tannin stains and mildew. Allow to dry completely before oiling.

**What NOT to do:** Don’t use a high-pressure water blaster at close range — it will raise the grain, damage the timber surface and force water into the subframe. Keep it at low pressure or use a soft brush.

### Spot Checks and Repairs

Every year, check:
– **Soft spots** — press firmly on boards across the deck. Any sponginess indicates rot beginning. Catch it early and replace just those boards.
– **Fasteners** — any raised screws or nails should be countersunk and filled to prevent snags.
– **Subframe** — if you can access it, check bearers and joists for any signs of rot or termite damage.
– **Balustrades** — check all connections are still solid. This is a safety issue.

## Composite Deck Maintenance

Good news: composite decking maintenance is dramatically simpler than timber.

### The Basic Routine

**Every 1–3 months:**
– Sweep off leaves and debris
– Hose down or wipe down with warm soapy water
– Clear any buildup from between boards (leaves trapped between boards can cause mold in persistently damp conditions)

That’s genuinely it for most composite decks.

### Stubborn Stains

For BBQ grease, wine, or other stains:
– Most come off with warm water and a soft brush
– Tougher stains: use a composite deck cleaner (avoid bleach-based products on capped composite)
– For mould or mildew: a diluted vinegar solution or composite-specific mould remover works well

### What to Avoid on Composite Decking

– **High-pressure washing at close range** — can damage the cap layer
– **Metal shovels or scrapers** — use plastic tools only
– **Oil-based products** — composite doesn’t need oiling and these products can stain
– **Leaving BBQ grease to sit** — clean it up promptly

## Deck Sanding and Restoration

If your timber deck has seen better days — greyed, cracked, or with old paint/stain peeling off — a full sand and re-oil can make it look almost new again for a fraction of replacement cost.

Our team offers **deck sanding and restoration** services across Sydney. We machine-sand the boards back to fresh timber, then apply a premium penetrating oil for a result that genuinely looks like a new deck.

This is a great option if your boards are still structurally sound but looking tired. It typically costs $30–$60/m² compared to $300–$900/m² for replacement.

## When Maintenance Isn’t Enough: Time to Replace

Signs it’s beyond maintenance:
– Multiple soft or rotten boards
– Structural movement in the frame (bouncing, creaking)
– Widespread cracking through the board thickness (not just surface)
– Severe termite damage
