Killara is one of Sydney’s most leafy and established suburbs, known for its generous block sizes, heritage homes and streets lined with mature eucalypts and native trees. Building a deck here means working with the landscape rather than against it — designing around slope, retaining trees where possible, and choosing materials that suit both the bushland setting and the architectural character of the home.
At 5 Star Decking, we’ve built decks across Sydney for over a decade. In this guide, we’ll walk through what deck construction in Killara typically involves, from site challenges and council considerations to material selection and design ideas that work well on the Upper North Shore.
Why Killara homes benefit from custom deck design
Killara’s blocks tend to be larger than the Sydney average, but they rarely come flat. Many properties slope gently or steeply toward a valley or creek line, and the suburb’s canopy cover means decks often need to be designed around established trees, root zones and natural drainage paths.
A well-built deck makes the most of these conditions. A sloping block can become a multi-level entertaining area. A shaded, south-facing yard can benefit from a raised deck that catches winter sun. A narrow side passage between a heritage home and a boundary fence can be transformed into a private timber walkway or reading nook.
The key is working with a builder who understands how to read the site and design a structure that fits both the landscape and your lifestyle — not a one-size-fits-all kit deck dropped on stumps.
Site challenges common in Killara
Working with sloping blocks
Many Killara properties have a fall of one to three metres from front to back. This is where bearers, joists and post-and-beam construction come into their own. A deck built on a slope can level out an unusable yard, creating a flat outdoor living area with a seamless connection to the home’s interior.
Proper footings are essential. Depending on the soil type and slope, we might use concrete piers, screw piles or timber posts on galvanised stirrups. Every deck we build is engineered to suit the specific block — not a generic specification copied from the last job.
Designing around mature trees
Killara’s trees are part of what makes the suburb special, but they also pose challenges. Root zones need protection, overhanging branches can affect board placement, and leaf litter requires a maintenance plan.
We routinely build decks that curve around tree trunks, leave gaps for future growth, or incorporate the canopy as a natural shade feature. If you’re planning a deck around existing trees, it’s worth discussing options early — some solutions are much cheaper to design in from the start than to retrofit later.
Bushfire considerations
Parts of Killara fall within bushfire-prone areas, particularly properties bordering Lane Cove National Park or the Garigal corridor. If your property is in a BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) rated zone, decking materials and construction methods must comply with relevant standards.
This doesn’t mean your options are limited. Several of the hardwoods we work with — including Spotted Gum and Blackbutt — are rated for use in BAL-12.5 and BAL-19 zones. Composite decking products also have BAL-rated options. We’ll advise on what’s suitable for your specific rating during the design stage.
Material choices that work on the Upper North Shore
Killara homes range from Federation and Californian bungalow styles to mid-century brick homes and contemporary new builds. The right decking material depends on the architecture, budget and maintenance preference.
Hardwood decking
Spotted Gum remains our most popular choice for Killara. Its natural colour variation — from pale biscuit tones to rich browns — suits both heritage and modern homes. It’s a Class 1 durability timber, well-suited to the area’s humidity and shade patterns.
Blackbutt is another excellent option, particularly for lighter-toned homes. Its pale straw-to-honey colour brightened shaded yards and it carries a natural fire resistance that makes it suitable for BAL-rated zones.
Merbau (also known as Kwila) offers a rich reddish-brown tone and is a cost-effective option that performs well across Sydney’s climate range.
Composite decking
For homeowners who want the look of timber without the regular oiling and staining, composite decking is increasingly popular in Killara. Brands like ModWood, Evalast, and Trex offer wood-look boards that resist fading, rot and insect attack. Composite is particularly well-suited to heavily shaded yards where timber may take longer to dry between rain events.
Council considerations in the Ku-ring-gai area
Most Killara properties fall under Ku-ring-gai Council. Decks that are more than 25 square metres, more than 1 metre above ground level, or that require tree removal will typically need a Development Application (DA) or Complying Development Certificate (CDC).
Many smaller, lower-level decks qualify as exempt development, but the rules around site setbacks, tree protection and heritage items can be specific. We can advise on what approvals your project is likely to need and work with your certifier to keep the process straightforward.

Design ideas for Killara decks
Based on the blocks we’ve worked on in the area, here are a few design ideas that tend to suit Killara homes well:
- Multi-level decks that step down a slope, creating separate zones for dining, lounging and a smaller quiet area
- Picture-frame borders for a clean, architectural look that suits both heritage and contemporary homes
- Integrated privacy screening using timber slats or glass to create shelter from neighbouring properties without blocking views
- Built-in bench seating that doubles as storage for outdoor cushions and garden tools
- Deck and pergola combinations that provide shade over the main entertaining area while leaving the lower deck open to the sky
