Best Decking for Pool Areas in Sydney (What Actually Works)

—

Pool decking is one of the most exciting projects we do — and one of the most important to get right. Choose the wrong material and within a few years you’re dealing with warping, splinters, slippery surfaces or rot. Choose the right one and your pool area becomes the centrepiece of your home for decades.

Here’s what actually works for Sydney pool decks — and what to avoid.

## The 4 Most Important Factors for Pool Decking

Before we get into materials, here’s what pool decking needs to do that a regular deck doesn’t:

1. **Slip resistance** — wet feet + slippery deck = liability nightmare. This is non-negotiable.
2. **Moisture resistance** — the area will constantly be wet. The material must handle it.
3. **Heat underfoot** — dark-coloured materials in direct Sydney sun can get painful. Lighter tones are better.
4. **Chemical resistance** — pool chemicals (chlorine) splash onto deck surfaces. Some materials degrade faster than others.

## Best Materials for Sydney Pool Decking

### 1. Composite Decking (Our Top Pick)
Composite decking ticks almost every box for pool areas. It’s moisture-resistant, won’t rot, doesn’t splinter (critical for bare feet), and premium brands have built-in slip resistance.

**Best composite options for pool areas:**
– **Millboard** — excellent slip resistance, looks stunning, doesn’t absorb water
– **Trex** — slip-resistant grooved boards, fade and stain resistant, 25-year warranty
– **Eva-Last** — bamboo-composite hybrid, naturally cool underfoot, great for hot Sydney summers
– **TimberTech** — specifically designed for wet and coastal environments

**One thing to watch:** Darker coloured composite boards can get hot in full Sydney summer sun. Choose lighter tones or ensure some shade coverage.

### 2. Hardwood Timber (Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Tallowwood)
Done properly, hardwood timber creates a breathtaking pool deck. The key is choosing the right species.

**Best timber for pool areas:**
– **Spotted Gum** — naturally slip-resistant when properly finished, beautiful grain, very durable
– **Blackbutt** — pale, cooler underfoot, great slip rating, Australian native
– **Tallowwood** — naturally resistant to moisture and termites, excellent pool deck choice

**Avoid:** Merbau around pools — it bleeds tannins (dark reddish marks) when wet, which will stain your pool surrounds and the water. Beautiful elsewhere, but not ideal poolside.

**The maintenance reality:** Timber pool decks need oiling every 12 months minimum. Skip it and the sun and water will cause cracking. Factor this into your decision.

### 3. What to Avoid Around Sydney Pools

– **Treated pine** — not suitable for permanent wet areas. It swells, warps and splinters.
– **Tiles or concrete** — we’re deck builders so we’ll be biased, but tiles crack in Sydney’s temperature extremes and ungrouted tile around pools is a slip hazard.
– **Cheap composite** — not all composite is equal. Unbranded or cheap composite boards can warp, fade and lose their slip resistance quickly. Stick to reputable brands.

## Does Pool Decking Need Council Approval in Sydney?

In NSW, pool safety compliance is strict — and for good reason. Any structural decking around a pool that affects fencing or access to the pool area must comply with the Pool Safety Standards (AS 1926.1).

Our team handles all of this for you — we know the regulations, ensure your deck meets safety requirements, and can advise on what needs council sign-off.
